With the winter months approaching, it is important to keep your fleet prepared for cold temperatures and the numerous hazards that accompany the season. To ensure your fleet is well-prepped for the harsh weather, here are some fleet maintenance service tips to keep you safe and productive.

Fuel Checks

With temperatures decreasing, there is a stronger likelihood that your gas tank could freeze over if you are not maintaining a higher fuel level. This is due to water vapor building up in your tank and causing the fuel lines to freeze, which in turn does not allow your engine to start up. The general rule is to keep your tank filled at least halfway when temperatures are below zero, especially when the engine isn’t running. Adding gas-line antifreeze to your tank can also help lower the risk of your gas lines freezing over.

Heavy-duty Wipers

Snowfall and heavy winter storms are always a threat and can cause a lot of buildup on your windshield, making it a lot harder to see. Heavy-duty wipers should help maintain clear vision on the road even in harsher conditions. These are a must, especially if your fleet frequently travels to areas where heavy snowfall is normal.

Oil & Fluid Levels

As always, you want to keep up to date with your oil and fluid levels. These routine checks are very vital as we enter the winter season. This includes checking your oil, battery fluid, engine coolant, power steering, etc. You want to make sure these are checked often and topped off before any harsh winter storms hit. Be sure to schedule your fleet’s PM service and stay up to date.

Tires & Brake Checks

Slick roads are common, so be ready by ensuring your fleet is equipped with the traction and stopping capabilities needed. Winter tires provide the best traction on the icy roads. You should also make sure all tires have the correct PSI as the cold weather typically causes tire pressure to decrease drastically. Correctly filled tires allow for better grip and traction on the road. Your brakes/brake pads should always be up to date as well. Slippery roads are hard to stop on, especially for bigger vehicles. Routinely checking and maintaining your brake systems is a huge necessity during the cold winter months.

Check Your Lights

During the winter months, there tends to be less daylight which in turn brings a larger need for operational head and taillights.  This helps you see the road better and allows others on the road to see you better. This includes headlights, taillights and turn signals. You want to make sure they are all clean and functional before embarking on any trip.
