Red Classic has been a long-time transportation partner for Sonoco, a provider of diversified consumer packaging and industrial products. This summer, the two teamed up to tackle sustainability.

Collaboration began with interns Kaci Ramlow (Red Classic) and Kate Michell (Sonoco) at Sonoco’s paper mill facility in South Carolina. Their goal was to reduce excess emissions by increasing operational efficiency. At the time, the yard servicing the paper mill battled scheduling errors, lengthy check-in times for drivers and reduced space for trucks to maneuver quickly. These operational inefficiencies increased led to excessive idling which contributes to emissions.

The two partners came together and identified solutions to improve the flow of the yard. Improved signage was added to better direct drivers upon arrival, excess trailers were removed to increase driving space and more detailed directions were added prior to each load to reduce late fees and waiting times.

With these enhancements in place, Sonoco and Red Classic have greatly reduced congestion and increased the speed and accuracy of deliveries – directly reducing excess emissions, idle times and the carbon footprint of both companies. Sonoco, Red Classic, Planet Earth – all benefited from this great partnership.
